6 Steps to be a Better You

It’ s important to realize that there are things you can improve in your live. Here are 6 simple steps to become successful, and more positive. More important than both of those facts is that you will learn more about yourself.

1. Figure Out More About Yourself

Perhaps the most difficult step is the first step. To add to the difficulty, we must think deep.  I know for some people it’s very challenging to discover more about personality and how you react in certain situations, but it’s important to start now.  In my opinion, the first thing you should do is take a personality test.  The second thing you should do is start to study personality.  When you learn about yourself, and why you act a certain way in different situations, it becomes much easier finding your strengths, careers, and the best type of friends.  If you’re interested in learning more about your personality and would like to take a test as well, you should check out our most popular podcast on personality types.

2. Eliminate the Negativity in Your Life

Figuring out more about yourself and eliminating negativity in your life go hand in hand.  When you fully understand the personalities you get along with, the careers that best suit your strengths, and the things that eliminate stress, the negativity is bound to fade. For some, thinking positive will take a long time.  Start defeating the negativity in small steps. Start being thankful for larger things that you would normally be negative about.  After practice, you will start wondering why everyone looks at things in such a negative way.  I remember a time I was having dinner with a guest and the person I was with started to pick out everything they disliked on the menu. I then suggested picking the things they enjoyed and going from there.  This is an example that may be small to some, but will soon be obvious with proper practice.

3. Eat healthier and exercise

Without the proper nutrients the mind and body will not be able to keep up with the new you. Eating healthy is something many of us slack on along with getting daily exercise.  It is important as young adults to change our eating and fitness habits now.  Hopefully, if you have completed the first 2 steps successfully you will want to eat healthier and workout as a result.  The best advice I can give on this is to figure out the lies we tell ourselves everyday about eating healthy and exercising.  Those lies we say to ourselves to feel better about what we eat actually impacts our minds in a way that it actually convinces us that what we eat is beneficial. We tell ourselves that drinking 0 calorie Sprite is great, and that it is better than other drinks. That might be a something you tell other people, but it is actually a lie you are telling yourself.  You must tell yourself to get better each day. You eat a salad, and you tell yourself, “How can make this salad even healthier?”  Treat your health like learning and a business; there is always room to improve.

4. Create goals

As we get older our lives get busier and to handle all the things we are trying to carry out it is important to set goals and manage your time.  Set some time to dream, but more importantly write those dreams down.  When you write your dreams and set a date they become goals.  I highly recommend you type or write your goals on a piece of paper and hang in by your bed, so you can read it when you wake up and before you fall asleep.

5. Learn as much as you can, and become a more efficient learner

Take a look in your local library and notice all the books.  Now list how many of those books you have read.  How about something a bit easier.  Pick a subjects that interest you and head to those sections. How many of those books have you read? Find a way to fit more reading into your life, as it is the best way to become more successful. It is also crucial to become a more efficient learner.  Find ways to learn from everything you do. Sit back and think what did I learn today? and make it a priority to learn something everyday.  For example, I started watching documentaries on Netflix instead of shows about 3 years ago because I wanted to learn from everything I do. Now when I sit down to watch TV, I am still learning.  When you get on your laptop to surf, surf for things that teach you something.  Of course you should learn about things that interest you because this is how you relieve stress and become an expert at your strengths.

6. Drop the ego and become more humble

Sometimes we don’t even realize we have an ego.  After following these steps it may become a challenge staying humble about the things you have learned and achieved. Remember, it is just fine to talk about your goals and progress, just don’t brag. Find a good friend to give you some honest feedback on how you can become more humble.  Some simple techniques to become more humble would be:

  1. Listen more than you talk
  2. Give credit to others that deserve it
  3. Study moral principles
  4. Ignore first impressions of people
  5. Realize the potential in others

A fun little exercise for the readers.  List the 3 most important values in your life (ex. family, heath). Now list everything you did or are going to do today.  After you have your list, decide how many of those things relate to your values. For some of you many things will relate, but for the brutally honest and slackers they wont.

If you practice these 6 steps each day you will become a better person.  Don’t start tomorrow, start today and continue practicing these steps for the rest of your life.  Do not listen to the naysayers, you are extraordinary.  Remember work hard and you will be able to get anything you want in life, but don’t forget to give back.

  1. Hi! Just thought I’d drop by after the great comment you left for me the other day about the Myers-Briggs test. The way you present the info here is fantastic. I’ll be back for sure.
